Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Gypsy Moth?
The Gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar) caterpillar is a destructive pest that feeds on several hundred species of trees (with a preference for hardwoods) and shrubs.

What do they look like?
They have brownish-, or blackish-colored bodies, with rows of blue or red bumps sprouting tufts of hair.  They will grow to be approximately 2 inches long when fully mature.

When do the larvae emerge?
They usually emerge in the spring in concert with the budding of most hardwood trees in the area.  They reach maturity during June and into early July.

Where are they a problem?
In the U.S., they are a problem primarily in the Eastern, Northeastern, and Midwestern states.

What are signs that they are in my trees?
You may notice any of the following as an indication of gypsy moth presence:

  • Buff colored or bleached out egg masses
  • The movement of larvae up and down the tree trunk
  • Silken threads encompassing the leaves or branches of trees
  • Partially eaten leaves
  • Partially or fully defoliated branches or trees

What will they do to my tree?
They have voracious appetites for leaves and will likely defoliate your tree. Successive years of defoliation may weaken, and potentially kill, your tree.

Do they usually just attack one tree?
The larvae can spread easily from tree-to-tree with the help of the wind and therefore usually affect many trees in the same area.  They will eat all day and night and can quickly defoliate an entire tree, leaving it weak and susceptible.

Are they usually gone after one year?
The Gypsy Moth will likely remain in your area in subsequent years after it has arrived. You may not experience a large infestation, but there is a risk that they will repopulate to large quantities.

How can I prevent this defoliation from happening?
If you know that they are in or near your area, you may want to take preventative measures to preserve your trees.

How can the Eradicoat Gypsy Moth Control System help?
The Eradicoat Gypsy Month Control System is one potential solution to prevent the gypsy moth caterpillars from scaling your tree and defoliating the leaves.

The simple application process involves applying a special latex polymer formulation (which contains 2% Permethrin) to burlap and wrapping it around a tree trunk to establish a deadly barrier for the gypsy moth caterpillar. In just a few minutes, you can provide your tree with a season’s worth of protection from this destructive pest.  Click here to see our simple three step process for applying our solution.

What’s included in the Eradicoat® Gypsy Moth Control Kit?
Each kit contains one quart of Eradicoat® insecticide, one pump sprayer, 35 feet of burlap banding, 85 feet of jute string, four push pins and detailed instructions for application.

How many trees will the kit cover?
With proper application, a kit will cover approximately 11 trees with a diameter of 12 inches or approximately 7 trees with a diameter of 18 inches.
